Eh, I didn't get expert/master in this mission (one of the only 2 I've missed so far), but I did manage it with heroes/henchies pretty easily, and without looking it up in wiki! (ya know, cause it's slow as molasses lately)
I'm sure there are some nice tactics out there, like sending the whispers guys to either the right or left, and managing the middle + the other side. Aside from that, it's pretty much just an assault. Kill what you can, and don't let the groups past the bridges. I know that's kinda -duhh- stuff, sorry, it's all I got until I try it again.

Focus your group on offense. Take at least 1 decent warrior and 1 other decent physical. Send one group to defend each point and hold your ground at the center. If the left group gets in trouble help them, but for the most part the start should be easy.
As soon as the generals appear charge straight for the warrior, focus all effort on him. As soon as he dies retreat to center ignoring the others around him. Head over to the opposite side and do the same for the ele boss. Only get on the kournans if a kournan priest spawns. Again after assassinating the boss fall back to center. Spawns are significantly reduced now. Rush the paragon boss in a similar manner, but mop up after him. Finally do a full rush straight for the monk boss, when he dies the mission ends.
Basically, knock the wind out of the enemy forces before they even get started. The key is taking just enough to keep your party from dying (two monks and motivation hench is more than enough) and then everything else should have strong offense. If anything dies (one or two may occur vs ele) just sig them back up and keep fighting.

I haven't tried henching it, but it's pretty easy in a PuG if enough people have Lightbringer's Gaze.

My advice is to stay centered. Help the sides if they start getting wiped out, but you should focus on staying in front of the Center Bombard. Once the Generals appear, by the structure of the spawns (did this 5 times for Master's) you will be in front of the Monk Boss. I ganked him and ran, using the minions I had to keep the enemies at the portal busy while I mopped up along the sides. I played defense for a while, then ganked the Paragon after a patrol left. At that point, the West(?) gate was safe, so I went along the other side, taking out the Ele and the Warrior last.
My 2 cents.

This mission was Mastered on my second try (I quit the first try because I didn't know I could send three groups of soldiers)
Just send one group to each side. They can usually hold off a Kournan group, thanks to the bombards. Then just go kill everything.

How i got Masters:
I send all 3 groups to the East. Brought a MM(2 can work aswell - Tons of corpses). Kill the generals when the groups are small.
I heard that you could Master it even though one of the defenses fall.

I failed a couple times trying to split the group, we had a mainly human party, hero monks, basically just bring a lot of heavy hitters into the group and only a couple support people, then just ball the group up and run around everywhere and bulldoze everything, then when generals show up bulldoze them in order from right to left. If you work fast enough you'll beat it before they can destroy your defenses, oh and position the whispers people with one group at each area, one at center, one at left, and one at right.

I can only seem to find 3 of the 4 Generals. Is one of them hiding somewhere?
I take the monk in the center, then the general on each side which I believe is an Ele and a Warrior. Where is the 4th?

When I got masters on it, one of the defenses got overran. So I'm assuming it didn't just glitch out on me.

Ok this can be henched/heroed and you get masters on 5/6 defenses being intact.
Easy way to do this is:
You need these 3 heroes, MM (Set up whispers as MM), Monk and Ele with Searing Flames or high damage skills. Take your pick of henches but do put in a healer and motivation hench.
Send all of the whispers guys to one side i.e. east or west. Kill off the waves at the other two sides until your MM has his minions up and running. The groups are easy till the generals materialise. Then flag your MM and Monk hero to hold the center while you charge to the other end and kill off the general on that end (So basically with henches, 6 chars attack. Once the general is dead, no more waves will come from that side). Then go and kill off the other two generals (leaving the center general outside the fort for the last as he approaches the defenses at the very end). Do note that by the time you kill off the second general, the whispers will start getting overwhelmed so you would need to kill off that guy fast.
An even easier way to do this is with 2 real ppl having 2 MM's, 2 Eles and 2 Monk heroes. That way you can easily take out the generals in a short space of time.

Where is the 4th General?
I have not seen a reply yet on this, but to sum up my problem, I don't have much of a problem killing 3 of the 4 generals, however I can't find the 4th. In my efforts to look around the remaining portal, and through the caves behind the portals, the mission ends in defeat before I can find the last general. What am I missing? Where did the general go?

I got a masters too with heros and henchmen.
I had a similar tactic as Vorian.
The trick is that once your MM build up an army of 10 Bond Fiends, it can pretty much hold up one side on it's own. The extra monk and ele can hold another side on their own. Now just leaves yourself and 4 other henchmen to pick out those generals one by one.
Start killing from the right side with the warrior general, because it's the easiest to take down and closing the rift will stop the spawn. Then go for the monk or paragon, and ele last. Remember to reinforce your MM and ele+monk group when they need it.
Masters is 5/6, but I done it with all 6 intact.

you have 3 generals with 1 at the east, center and west gates.
the fourth is back inside at the top of the stairs near the spot you started the mission.
I sent 2 groups west, 1 center and I got the east first, then center, came back in and by this time the third general is at the top of the stairs, get him then go back for the final general, you can get expert easy this way but not masters.

I followed this advice when I was re-doing missions for my prot title, and this worked the very first try. Thanks!

My team sent all the NPCs over to the side with the Paragon and Elemental General and had them guard that area. Your team protects the other side and kills off the groups and takes out the Dervish and Warrior boss. By then the NPCs will need you're help on the other side (Where the elemental boss is at) and you can shift your focus all on that corner without worrying about the other side. We got masters without much trouble, and with pretty generic builds.

My plan was total chaos, and it's worked every time lol.
Send one Whispers group each to the East, West, and Center.
Head out immediately with your entire team. Take out groups as they come, generals first, largely ignoring the side groups unless you see the Whispers getting overwhelmed OR you have free time until the next general.
Rush each general as they come, running crazily around the map.
Masters with hench/oes first try; I did not tweak my heroes' builds at all, just take whoever you usually take.
